The factors that were the most important in the shaping of the U.S. and their decision to commit ground forces to the war in Vietnam were the fear of losing America’s reputation, the fear of communism spreading throughout China to Vietnam and it is my belief that Johnson could have realistically made a different decision about Vietnam in 1965, by fully committing to the war. “The U.S. involvement in Vietnam was not about Vietnam, but about the United States and it’s credibility in a broader Cold War struggle” (Weise, TWV, 18:58). America’s reputation was based on Democracy and what it stood for and how it should be used to protect those who could not protect themselves from Communism. It was all about protecting basic human rights. “In each land the forces of independence would be considerably weakened and an Asia so threatened by Communist domination would certainly imperil the security of the United States itself” (DSB, Vol. 53, .doc). The dangers of Communistic governing was well known throughout the sphere of the Democratic Republics. To allow communism to gain further land and ocean access that were within striking distance to allies of Democratic Republic countries was a setting for similar situations like the Cuban missile crisis. Lyndon Johnson was not a strategic war minded president and lacked authoritarian presence. If he had committed the full might of American forces to the protection of democracy in south Vietnam then the communist may not have had such an opportunity to commit assassinations on the governing body. LBJ would inevitably be conflicted and distracted with civil rights movements and social unrest at home that he devoted his full attention to, while neglecting to address the failing efforts to conclude the civil war in Vietnam.
