Beowulf focuses primarily on battles with monsters rather than battles with men or other tribes/clans. Some scholars have argued that battling monsters raises the focus to a cosmic level of good vs evil since the monsters are adversaries of God. Do you agree or disagree with this analysis? Why or why not? What other purpose(s) might this focus on fighting monsters suggest?Option B: Beer and Boasting. So far we have read several different ‘hall’ scenes that revolve around eating, drinking, and boasting–both before and after battles. What is the purpose for including such ‘scenes’ in a story? What insights can we learn about the warrior culture of the Anglo-Saxons/early Germanic tribes from these hall celebrations and verbal boastings? Likewise, what can we learn about the role of ‘elite’ women from these hall celebrations? Option C: What’s Age Got To Do with It? Hrothgar is described as a “mighty lord [and a] long-good nobleman” (l. 130) and because he had “honor in battle” (l. 65) and “a mighty troop of men” (l. 67) to serve him, we can assume that he was a strong, capable warrior. Yet neither he nor his men (thanes) can protect Heorot. Because of this, Grendel attacks Heorot for 12 years and basically ‘rules’ the hall at night. Does Hrothgar’s inability to protect his hall and lead his men to fight against Grendel seem like a contradiction in the portrayal of Hrothgar? Why or why not? How does the story of Hrothgar shed light on the ‘life cycle’ of a leader? The point I believe Brusseau is trying to make here is that an ethical argument, constructed correctly, should stimulate discussion and discourse. It is important for people to have these discussions and dialogues about ethics because by having these conservations, people get to introduce a whole new perspective that maybe the first argument missed or ignored. These ethical arguments are meant to be tested, they “need to make sense to outside observers” (Brusseau, p.6, 2018) because that is how we determine if they are good or not. In other words, “the test of an ethical argument resembles the test of a recipe for a cook: others need to be able to follow it and come to the same result” (Brusseau, p.6, 2018). The arguments are not meant to brainwash individuals, or make them follow these positions blindly. Their purpose is to spark conservations and talk through their beliefs on why this is right and clearly explain their whole proof. The main point is to get the other person to understand your reasoning, and that can only occur if your conclusions are “composed from clear values, recognized facts, and solid arguments” (Brusseau, p.6, 2018). In the first chapter of his book, Brusseau details an example of a practice by the University of Alabama, that was questioned for not being ethical. He made a clear argument, first by deciding what was most important and valuable in the situation, then by gathering and understanding all the facts, and then, he was finally able to construct his argument for why he believed the high textbook prices and kickbacks received by the university off them was unethical. This then, opens up the topic for discussion because since “well-developed ethical positions expose their reasoning so openly (as opposed to “it doesn’t smell right”), they tend to invite responses” (Brusseau, p.9, 2018) . In many cases, ”there may remain disagreements about facts and values at the end of an argument in ethics, but others need to understand the reasoning marking each step taken on the way to your conclusion”(Brusseau, p.6, 2018). Everyone has their own ideas about what is ethically right and wrong, and that is why it is important to discuss all sides of these stories. The book illustrates 3 ways people can formulate counterarguments, “you can attack the 1.facts, 2. values, 3. Reasoning” (Brusseau, p.9, 2018) . Differences and counterarguments are welcomed when you have clear-good ethical arguments. You want to make your argument clear enough for people to fully understand it and have questions about it. Using the Government Spending and Taxation case, Chapters 5 and 6, the knowledge you have gained in this course, as well as at least three additional credible resources, analyze the case by addressing the following:

Describe how government spending and the composition of the government changed in recent decades. In other words, in what areas has the government cut spending and in what areas has the government increased spending in recent decades?

What is Sustainable Design?
Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of users, thereby improving intended performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.
Utilizing a sustainable design philosophy encourages decisions at each phase of the design process that will reduce negative impacts on the environment and the health of the occupants, without compromising the bottom line. It is an integrated, holistic approach that encourages compromise and tradeoffs. Such an integrated approach positively impacts all phases of the object’s life-cycle, including design, construction/manufacture, operation and decommissioning/recycling.

Uber Pays the Price
Nine years ago, Uber revolutionized the taxi industry and the way people commute. With the simple mission “to bring transportation—for everyone, everywhere,” today Uber has reached a valuation of around $70 billion and claimed a market share high of almost 90% in 2015. However, in June 2017 Uber experienced a series of bad press regarding an alleged culture of sexual harassment, which is what most experts believe caused their market share to fall to 75%.
In February of 2017 a former software engineer, Susan Fowler, wrote a lengthy post on her website regarding her experience of being harassed by a manager who was not disciplined by human resources for his behavior. In her post, Fowler wrote that Uber’s HR department and members of upper management told her that because it was the man’s first offense, they would only give him a warning. During her meeting with HR about the incident, Fowler was also advised that she should transfer to another department within the organization. According to Fowler, she was ultimately left no choice but to transfer to another department, despite having specific expertise in the department in which she had originally been working.
As her time at the company went on, she began meeting other women who worked for the company who relayed their own stories of harassment. To her surprise, many of the women reported being harassed by the same person who had harassed her. As she noted in her blog, “It became obvious that both HR and management had been lying about this being his ‘first offense.’” Fowler also reported a number of other instances that she identified as sexist and inappropriate within the organization and claims that she was disciplined severely for continuing to speak out. Fowler eventually left Uber after about two years of working for the company, noting that during her time at Uber the percentage of women working there had dropped to 6% of the workforce, down from 25% when she first started.
Following the fallout from Fowler’s lengthy description of the workplace on her website, Uber’s chief executive Travis Kalanick publicly condemned the behavior described by Fowler, calling it “abhorrent and against everything Uber stands for and believes in.” But later in March, Uber board member Arianna Huffington claimed that she believed “sexual harassment was not a systemic problem at the company.” Amid pressure from bad media attention and the company’s falling market share, Uber made some changes after an independent investigation resulted in 215 complaints. As a result, 20 employees were fired for reasons ranging from sexual harassment to bullying to retaliation to discrimination, and Kalanick announced that he would hire a chief operating officer to help manage the company. In an effort to provide the leadership team with more diversity, two senior female executives were hired to fill the positions of chief brand officer and senior vice president for leadership and strategy.

Webmasters was an Internet start-up company founded in 2016. One of the largest problems for Webmasters was developing the technological systems necessary to support its rapidly expanding user base. Furthermore, due to the rapid expansion in recent years, many of its systems had been added hastily, resulting in poor integration and questionable data integrity. As a result, the CEO of Webmasters announced an initiative to integrate all systems and increase the quality of internal data. In compliance with this initiative, Webmasters purchased an expensive and complex billing system called BillPro, which would automate the billing for thousands of Internet accounts via credit cards.
During the integration, BillPro, in collaboration with Visa, created a phony credit card number that could be used by developers and programmers to test the functionality and integration of the BillPro system. Moreover, this credit card number was fully functional in “live” environments, so testers and developers could ensure functionality without being required to use actual personal or company credit card numbers. The activity on this card was not monitored. The integration went smoothly; however, it created thousands of corrupt accounts that required fixing.
Tyler, the manager of the Operations Department, was responsible for the resolution of all data integrity issues. His team was tasked with fixing all corrupt accounts created by the launch and integration of the BillPro system. As a result, Tyler was given the phony credit card number, which was kept on a Post-it Note in his drawer.
One of the top performers on the Operations team was a 29-year-old male named Ethan. Ethan had worked in Operations for more than a year and was making $15 per hour, the same salary as when he was hired. He was an introvert working to support a family and put himself through school. Ethan was the most technologically savvy individual on the team, and his overall systems knowledge exceeded that of his manager, Tyler. Ethan was brilliant in creating more efficient tools and methods to repair corrupted accounts. Therefore, Ethan was tasked with conducting training for new employees and updating team members on new processes and tools that he had created. As a result, he quickly became a trusted and valuable team member. Tyler gave him, and the other team members, the phony credit card number to increase the productivity of the team.
However, after six months of working at Webmasters, Ethan received an official reprimand from the company for using the company system to access websites containing pirated software and music. The FBI attended the investigation and determined that Ethan had not been a major player in the piracy. Therefore, Ethan was quietly warned and placed on a short-term probation. Tyler was asked to write a warning letter for the action; however, after a brief conversation with Ethan, Tyler determined that Ethan’s intentions were good and Tyler never officially submitted the letter because Ethan was a trusted employee and elevated the overall performance of the team.
A few months after the piracy incident, Tyler noticed some changes in Ethan’s behavior:

Ethan’s computer monitor was repositioned so that his screen was not visible to coworkers.
Ethan had the latest technological innovations including a new smartphone, an MP3 player, a Play Station, a new laptop, a tablet and a new car stereo system.
Ethan was going out to lunch more frequently.
Ethan frequently used multiple fake usernames and passwords for testing purposes.
