Following different businesses’ social media networks and updates can give consumers a feeling of loyalty and ownership that a business might not garner without a social media presence. Marketing on social media can be something as easy as having a contest that creates a new name of a particular product or service. It gets the people involved and they get drawn into the contest and share it with friends or spread the hashtag of the name they want, and then when a winner is revealed they feel like they were a part of the process and in that there is a sense of loyalty since as a team, we all created this new product name and have to try it out. All the company had to do was create the right posts online. No paying for printed media and no high-priced commercials with big celebrities. There is a lot of free advertisement online that actually reaches the targeted audience, since it is that audience doing the sharing and spreading of the information.
Building up a brand that no one has heard of can be hard but social networks create an efficient way to find your target audience and market directly to them. Then the brand grows and customers are spreading the news about the brand by sharing that information with others who might be interested. For example, a new restaurant created a burger and wanted customers to choose the name of that burger online through polls and comments. They create a Facebook post saying “pick the name of this signature burger, Like for Double Trouble, Share for Godzilla, comment below to let us know your own suggestions, stop in and use the phrase ‘contest burger’ to get 10% off your purchase”. People see this and no matter which response they use it ends up in their friends’ timelines as well. Now their friends see it and engage with the post also and it starts to go viral. Even if people are only interested in providing input, their interaction might lead to their friends’ becoming interested in the place. All based on one post that took 10 minutes to perfectly plate the burger and create the post, versus weeks of preparing and planning flyers, advertisements, radio ads, commercial time, and all of the money it takes to do all of that. The business can now promote their products and engage with customers and potential customers in a way that could not be done before.

At Nucor, steel worker production bonuses are based not only on what their own mill does, but on how others fare also. When a grid goes out, it hurts all. That’s why when Hickman’s electrician colleagues called for help, people didn’t need top management to tell them to go; they responded on their own. Two electricians from the company’s South Carolina plant boarded the first plane they could get to Memphis. Arriving at 11:00 p.m., they rented a car and drove two hours directly to the Hickman mill. The third electrician, from the company’s Decatur, Alabama, plant, was in Indiana, visiting another Nucor site. He immediately drove to Hickman. Combined with Hickman staff, they camped out on site and worked 20-hour shifts to mobilize the plant in three days—much less than the anticipated week. They received no extra pay for their effort. Why would they do such a thing? It’s because of Nucor’s unique way of motivating their workforce and the strong family bond throughout its employment ranks. First, there’s pay. Nucor steelworkers make only about $10 hourly, compared to the typical steelworker’s $16 to $21 hourly. Managers also earn salaries as much as 20 percent below what competitors pay. But what a difference incentives can make! Based on previous production incentives for their mills, Nucor’s steel-workers have averaged $79,000 in pay and incentives. Nucor has also participated in company profits haring, in which bonuses vary from year to year. In good years, employees earned a $20,000 one-time bonus bringing the total to $99,000. Workers’ incentives are tied not only to quality production in their own mill, but also to that of other mills and overall company profits. They can track their performance each week, so they know exactly where they stand. However, it’s more than just dollars that make Nucor special. The company became the darling of the late1980s when its unique “pay for performance” system was implemented under then CEO Ken Iverson. Iverson insisted on a culture resulting in employees feeling like  owners. In addition to their pay system, Iverson empowered employees to make critical decisions, implement their ideas, and take risks. The rest is history. Operating in a single North Carolina location then, and in an underdog role to U.S. Steel and other giants, the lean mini-mill company in 2013 has approximately22,000 employees and is the largest steel producer in the United States, with revenues of $18.91 billion. Between 2002 and 2006 its 387 percent return to share-holders beat almost all companies listed in the Standard and Poor stock index. However, like most companies, Nucor’s market value suffered due to the Great Recession. Successful organizations, like Nucor, take advantage of down times to strategically position themselves for when things improve. I touched a little bit on trauma, emotional and physical, because this is what I have become familiar with and have witnessed specific behaviors stemming from trauma. Theory may explain human behavior and I can see that this has been deemed accurate. If a child is exhibiting certain behaviors theory allows us to find a correlation between these behaviors, the client and the environment that the client comes from which may give insight as to why this is occurring or why the client is having this reaction.
